Leadership in Epic Literature Rama and Sundiata - Literature Essay Samples
Leadership is a prominent theme in both The Ramayana and Sundiata An Epic of Old Mali. A leader holds numerous qualities, whether they are skills that were developed or traits, that distinguish him or her from others. As and even before they undergo extreme situations, it is clear that both Rama and Sundiata possess the important qualities necessary in a leader honor, altruism and the ability to form lasting alliances. Rama behaves honorably by fulfilling his familial duties and fighting a fight fairly. King Dasaratha is renowned for staying true to his word and Rama is ââ¬Å"blessedto carry out his fatherââ¬â¢s command, and to live in the forestsâ⬠(Narayan, 46). Although Ramaââ¬â¢s exile is unreasonable, he still expresses gratitude to King Dasaratha and Kaiyeki because he believes that it his duty as a son to execute his familyââ¬â¢s wishes. By carrying out this command, Rama fulfills this duty and ensures that his father does not break his promise to Kaiyeki. This is an act of honor because Rama puts his familyââ¬â¢s needs before his own and he secures his fatherââ¬â¢s reputation. Furthermore, Rama behaves honorably on the battlefield in his fight against Ravana. Ravana has fainted in the middle of the battle and Rama says to Matali, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËIt is not fair warfare to attack a man who is in a faintâ⬠â⬠and he waits for Ravana to recuperate (Narayan, 146). Ram a had the opportunity to kill Ravana, in this moment of weakness, and end the war once and for all. However, he chooses to let Ravana recover because killing an unconscious man is neither a honorable nor moral route to victory, despite risking his own life by continuing the war. Similarly, Sundiata demonstrates an act of honor by also fulfilling his familial duties. Due to Sundiataââ¬â¢s powerless legs, he is ridiculed by the people of Mali for being weak and incapable of carrying his fatherââ¬â¢s throne. But when his mother voices her shamefulness of having borne such a child, Sundiata promises her he will walk and he successfully does so while effortlessly lifting an iron bar. As a result, Sogolon ââ¬Å"was now surrounded with much respectâ⬠and her son became ââ¬Å"as popular as he had been despisedâ⬠(Niane, 22). By proving he could walk normally and demonstrating an immense amount of strength, Sundiata not only shows that he is capable of being the heir to Maghanââ¬â¢s throne, but he also ameliorates his familyââ¬â¢s reputation. This is an honorable act because as the son of a king, Sundiata is expected to carry on his fatherââ¬â¢s legacy and ensure that his family holds a respectable reputation in the kingdom and he succeeds in fulfilling this duty. As king, Sundiata effectively maintains his fatherââ¬â¢s legacy. He restores his fatherââ¬â¢s city ââ¬Å"in the ancient style his fatherââ¬â¢s old enclosure where he had grown upâ⬠and destroys the walls to expand the empire (Niane, 81). Sundiata honors his family again by rebuilding his city according to his fatherââ¬â¢s preferences and this assures that Maghan Fattaââ¬â¢s legacy will continue to live on in Mali. Ramaââ¬â¢s altruism towards potential enemies distinguishes him from others. Rama believes that ââ¬Å"one who seeks asylum must be given protectionâ⬠even if he or she betrays them (Narayan, 132). In one instance, after Vibishana has been banished from Ravanaââ¬â¢s kingdom, he travels to Ramaââ¬â¢s camp seeking ââ¬Å"asylumâ⬠and ââ¬Å"protectionâ⬠and Rama accepts him despite the potential of Vibishana being a spy (Narayan, 130). Rama, once again, prioritizes the needs of others before his own. He thinks that it is his duty to protect people and in turn, he takes a risk by assimilating Vibishana into his camp. By doing so, Rama also accepts the possibility of defeat, regardless of what the outcome may be. Additionally, rather than conquering and ruling Lanka himself, Rama bestows the crown of Ravanaââ¬â¢s empire to Vibishana, who had no intention of being the ruler (Narayan, 155). Although appropriating other empires would have presented Rama as an even greater leader, his decision of granting Vibishana to rule Lanka instead proves that he is altruistic. Sundiataââ¬â¢s altruism towards potential enemies also distinguishes him from others. Like Rama, Sundiata puts the needs of others before his own. In an effort to prove that Sundiata is deserving of death, Sassouma orders nine witches to go to his garden and pick from it. Sassouma believes that this will provoke Sundiata and cause him to beat them. Sassoumaââ¬â¢s plan backfires when Sundiata discovers the witches picking from his garden and as they run away, he yells to them, ââ¬Å"ââ¬Ëwhat is the matter with you to run away like this. This garden belongs to allââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Niane, 25). Sundiata has defied the expectations of the witches by approaching and speaking to them cordially. He offers them to pick from the garden whenever they are short of condiments and his ââ¬Å"heart full of kindnessâ⬠compels the witches to ask for forgiveness (Niane, 26). Despite their unpleasant encounter, Sundiata forgives them and even offers each of the witches an elephant. These acts reveal Sundiataââ¬â¢s consideration for his people because his garden is not sustenance for only his family, but also for everyone else. Rama is naturally adept at forming lasting alliances. Both his true identity and morals play a role in strengthening them. Following the kidnapping of Sita, Rama and Lakshmana form an alliance with a monkey king named Sugreeva. Rama makes a pact with him to help kill his brother, Vali, if he helps him find Sita. After Vali is shot by Rama, he tells him that ââ¬Å"Sugreeva and he will be [his] invaluable alliesâ⬠and the former will always have the honor to serve Rama because he is the reincarnation of Vishnu (104). Like Vishnu, Rama believes that it his duty to protect people and restore order in the world. As a result of this, Ramaââ¬â¢s true identity is easily identifiable and instantly garners the respect and the loyalty of those whom he encounters. Furthermore, Ramaââ¬â¢s intentions serve a part in the creation of alliances since he believes that it is his ââ¬Å"primary duty to help the weak and destroy evil wherever [he sees] itâ⬠¦[He helps] those that seek [his] helpâ⬠(Narayan, 103). Regardless of the circumstances, Rama still would have helped Sugreeva in defeating his brother out of the goodness of his heart. This shows that a leader does not always have to build relationships that must be mutually beneficial. Out of respect and support for Rama, Sugreeva and his other advisors are seen by his side during his return to Ayodhya. Sundiata possesses a similar adeptness in forming lasting alliances. After being exiled, Sundiata and his family travel to different kingdoms and build connections with the kings and their subjects. All of these kings recognize Sundiataââ¬â¢s destiny and aid him in fulfilling it. During his sojourn in Mema, Sundiata builds an alliance with the King, Moussa Tounkara, and leaves such a profound impact on him and the kingdom. He is considered as a son to Moussa Tounkara and thus, an ââ¬Å"heir to the throne of Memaâ⬠(46). Sundiataââ¬â¢s presence also contributes to the brief period of peace in Mema. These lead to the bitter feelings Moussa Tounkara has towards Sundiataââ¬â¢s departure. Despite of this, Moussa Tounkara grants him half of his army, which will be crucial in Sundiataââ¬â¢s predestined victory. It is Sundiataââ¬â¢s development into a man that draws the support and loyalty of Moussa Tounkara. Following the events of Sundiataââ¬â¢s victory against Soum aoro, all of the allies he had made during his exile congregate in celebration. ââ¬Å"one by one, the twelve kingsgot up and proclaimed Sundiata ââ¬ËMansaââ¬â¢ in their turnâ⬠(75). The twelve kings have pledged their allegiance and sworn loyalty to Sundiata. The Mansaââ¬â¢s allies unanimously assimilate into his empire and this action prolongs the alliance they have all formed. Rama and Sundiata dealt with their extreme situations with both grace and dignity. Although they undergo the ignominy of being exiled, they willingly accept the circumstances and do not attempt to orchestrate events in their favor. Nevertheless, their journeys help them achieve their destiny and become even stronger leaders.

Overview of Careers for Zoology Example For Students
Overview of Careers for Zoology Youââ¬â¢re on vacation with eight of your closest teenage girl friends and are staying in a cabin house at the mountains. Itââ¬â¢ the middle of the night, youââ¬â¢re sleeping soundly in your bunk, suddenly you hear noise outside of your window. You begin to panic, yet you donââ¬â¢t want to wake anybody up, convincing yourself itââ¬â¢s nothing you fall back asleep. Plenty of minutes later you hear a louder noise and decide to look outside your window, little did you know a six-foot black bear would be staring you down. After waking everyone up, you decide to call Animal Protection Hotline and explain to them that a black bear appears to be outside your cabin. They send a specialist to remove the bear, so out of curiosity you ask where the bear is going to be taken. They say that it will be held at the local zoo where he will be residing now and a zoologist will care for it. While many people think that zoology only deals with zoo animals, conservation and animal relocat ion are important parts of the field of zoology. Zoology is the intense research of animals, dead or alive, and the caring for their well-being as well as ensuring species management and survival. When you mention zoology plenty of people link it to zoos and caring for animal habitats, yet they donââ¬â¢t know that Zoology originates from Ancient Greek. (7) Aristotle is known as the founder of Zoology because he was the first to be intrigued by exotic animals. He published his research that he kept while studying certain species in the book ââ¬Å"De Animalibusâ⬠in 1476. (7) Even though Aristotle investigated a variety of different animals his main focus was Marine Life. (7) A birdââ¬â¢s egg fascinated him because it led him to investigate the gender differentiation s. (7) When Aristotleââ¬â¢s book became available to read plenty of people criticized his work, yet it did lead scientist to look into off spring reproduction. (7) However, Muslims were also curious about these exotic animals, yet they believed in two different types of studies: literary and practical. (8) This means they would learn about agriculture or veterinary medicine, despite after investigatin g both ways they decided to merge both studies into one because it all dealt with the study of animals. (8) A famous Muslim writer wrote a bestiary called ââ¬Å"Book of the Animalsâ⬠yet he was not credited because this bestiary expanded beyond zoology. (8) Another valuable researcher was Al-Asmai that contributed to this career because of his precise concept of breeding camels with horses. Scientist till this day are still researching animals and examining the remains of exotic animals. Zoology is an extremely broad career with plenty of different animals to research and care for. A zoologist should have obtained at the minimum a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree in biology or some sort of animals study. (1) The majority of government jobs and universities require for you to have a PhD to be considered for employment. (1) A couple of high school classes you could take to have an advantage is this field are statistics, data modeling, computer skills, and another advanced mathematics. (4) Beyond majoring in zoology a variety of graduates specialize in certain categories of animals. For example: cytologists specialize in whales, mammalogists specialize in mammals, and herpetologists specialize in amphibians and reptiles. (2) There are plenty of different careers that zoology can lead into such as pharmacy, dentistry, journalism, and biology. (2) A career in zoology also has specific jobs for different people because not every animal is the same. A zookeeper does a small part of everything for their explicit animal as they donââ¬â¢t exactly prepare the animals food, but they tell the cook about the dietary needs for the animal. They also clean the cage the animal is residing in and make sure nothing unsafe in is the possession or contact with them. A zookeeper will observe the animal and the way it behaves in their habitat. As they are observing, they will write down certain information because they write reports to let other specialist know about their data. Zookeepers want to inform doctors in the veterinary field if they believe the animal is not health because they want to prevent death. They are also responsible for grooming, exercising, and training the animal. Exotic animals are similar to humans because if they donââ¬â¢t get the right amount of exercise they can have health complications. It would be unsatisfact ory if the animal was to attack a visitor, therefor; they train the animal to stay inside of their habitat and away from visitors. The last important responsibility a zookeeper has to obtain as part of their job is speaking with visitors and/or presenting information about their specie. In the majority of zoos they will have scheduled hours when the zookeepers comes to speak to the public. They will inform you about the health of the animal, or if there is any way they could help keep them from becoming extent. A zookeeper does plenty of different tasks, yet they have others experts fulfill these jobs for them if they need help. (4) Essay on The Path I'll Take: ZoologyThe fifth credible zoologist is David Attenborough who did not physically study animals instead he presented the Nine Life Series. He was actually a naturalist that wrote and presented the information to inform people about this specific theory. The sixth zoologist is Clinton Richard Dawkins who published the book ââ¬Å"The Selfish Geneâ⬠which spoke about the gene view as part of evolution. He also was recognized for the word meme, which is a behavior instant that is said to have been passed down from one person to the other. The seventh credible zoologist is Stephen Robert Irwin who studied the crocodile in its natural habitat. He had different careers, yet they all revolved around crocodiles, like a wildlife expert, television host, and a conservationist. The eighth zoologist is Archie Carr III who studied the jaguar specie and persuades the Belize government to play an active role in protecting the land for jaguars. He is also the founder of ââ¬Å"Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuaryâ⬠which is in Belize. The ninth credible zoologist is Frederick William Frohawk who most was known for publishing three books revolving the topic of butterflies. He was also known for being a lepidopterist which is a person who studies or collects butterflies. The last most credible zoologist is James Henry Fleming who was known for studying birds and collecting information. He maintained an enormous library revolving ornithological which was donated to ââ¬Å"The Royal Ontario Museumâ⬠when he passed away. (11) Other zoologist that were extremely recognizable in the nineteen century were; Lamark, Curvier, Geoffroy St. Hiliare, Goethe, Owen, and Oken. (6) A zoologist doesnt only have to have a passion for animals; they also have to have a flexible work schedule. Zoologists usually work from Monday through Friday, but have to be able to work most desirable Saturdays or Sundays. (9) This is major if you are working in zoos as zookeepers because the large portion of tourist will visit on weekends and need someone to guide them. The hours you work will most likely not fluctuate because you will work since the time the facility opens till when it closes. Unless you have to stay overnight to observe an animal or they need you to care for a certain animal. (9) Usually a zoologist will relocate to different continents that have a different climate to explore animals in their natural habitat. Such as Australia because they have a variety of exotic animals that you would not necessarily see in The States. Strengths to becoming a zoologist would be to have the patience to observe animals for a long period of time. (9) Another major factor would consist of you being able to work indecently and not count much on working in teams. (5) You should also be able to do in depth research and be able to explain your research to people who are not acquainted with the study of animals. (9) It is difficult to obtain a job as a zoologist because there is only a certain amount of places that hire you. As for places that would employ you it would be universities, government research institutions, NHS, medical research companies, museums, culture organizations, zoos, wildlife trusts, and environment protection agencies. (9) Zoology consists of the study of animals and your desirability to physically interact with them, so you can write profound research of the specie you are investigating. In conclusion, Zoology had been around for centuries starting when Aristotle introduced the study of animals to the world. Hundreds of other specialists were intrigued by this study, which lead to the field of zoology. Anybody with a minimum bachelor degree in biology or animal study could pursue a career in zoology. There are a variety of different positions in this field such as, zoo keeper, wildlife educator, researcher, and wildlife rehabilitate. Depending on your position and how many years of experience you have you will get paid a bit more each time. One of the greatest concepts that zoologists are trying to figure out are if different species have common ancestors. Or if two different species were to interbreed they would create new specie into society. There are hundreds of zoologists who have participated in the research of animals, but there are a few that are recognized for their ideas. Zoologists will dedicate their lives to studying exotic animals and helping maintain c ertain species from extension. Improve Your Workplace Mood with 10 Basic Tips
Improve Your Workplace Mood with 10 Basic Tips Cheer up isnt feedback most of us typically get in our annual reviews, but studies show bringing a positive attitude into the office with you can improve relationships and productivity and make-up for the less exciting aspects of the daily grind.Try these 10 simple steps from The Undercover Recruiter to boost your mood and help you bring your A game every day!1. Eat HealthierIve never met a vending machine I didnt like, but I know that empty calories and sugary snacks during that 2 p.m. lull are not my friends! I started outsmarting temptation by bringing small baggies of almonds, trail mix, or granola bars to cut down on snacking, and using what I saved in the break room to treat myself to salads or fresh food options at lunchtime.2. Get Some ExerciseSome companies are able to offer discounted gym memberships or other workplace incentives to employees who take the time to workout and enjoy those exercise endorphins. Whether its a walk at lunch, a shift at a standing desk, or an earl y morning spin class, give your mind and body the energy they need by getting whatever exercise you can!3. Get More SleepI have to trick myself into this one by hiding my phone out of reach when I go to bed; otherwise I keep refreshing social media or checking my email despite the fact that literally nothing is going to happen that will need my attention before the morning. Make your bedroom a quiet, welcoming, dark space, and reserve sleeping hours for sleep.4. Give FeedbackIf youre dissatisfied with something at work, the best way to get some changes made is to speak up about it- productively, of course, so youre not just complaining. Talk to your boss or your colleagues if you have suggestions to improve your work environment; you might be surprised what a difference you can make by communicating what you need.5. Show GratitudeWhether youre higher up in the food chain or anchoring the entry-level spot, take a minute each day to express gratitude to someone who makes your job easi er, someone whose contribution you appreciate, or someone who often goes unrecognized. Keeping a journal at home or on your phone can help you document moments that made it all worthwhile, so you have something to look back at on a bad day.6. ReflectAnother task that journal is great for is looking back over the day or week youve just had. Where were you successful? Where do you have room to improve? When you take the time to review your performance thoughtfully, youll move through the workday with more awareness, which can lead to increased satisfaction and better work overall.7. MeditateWhether you take a little time to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths every hour or actually devote 20à minutes of your lunch hour to a more formal practice, meditation is proven to increase calm, focus, and empathy levels. Dont get caught up in a stressful day- step back and recenter yourself.8. Get to Know Your ColleaguesIf youre an introvert like me, this might sound dreadful. At the e nd of a long day, often the last thing I want to do is troop down to happy hour with the people Ive already spent all day with. But whether you strike up a conversation at Patricks birthday party (a.k.a. awkward cake in the conference room hour) or invite your counterpart from another department to eat lunch outside with you, find interpersonal connections at work to help you look forward to each day in the office.9. Help OthersSpending even 10-15 minutes helping someone else out can reliably make you feel better about yourself and your job. Just as beneficial, it may make them more willing to help you out in return someday; youre building social capital and improving your day at the same time.10. Take a Mental Health DayWe live in a work culture that values constant accessibility, putting in extra hours, and pushing ourselves forward incessantly. If youre lucky enough to have paid sick leave, treat yourself to a day where you dont think about work at all. It will all be waiting for you the next morning; after a day away to refresh yourself, youll already be happier on the job.à 10 Simple Steps to Being Happy at Workà Read More at theundercoverrecruiter.com

Lawrence's The Rocking-Horse Winner - Essay Example oundly polemical writer with radical views, who regarded sex, the primitive subconscious, and nature as cures to what he considered the evils of modern industrialized society.â⬠(Quoted in oldpoetry.com). Lawrence believed in creating such work that could describe the true picture of motivation behind human actions and reactions. ââ¬Å"The Rocking-Horse Winnerâ⬠is the example of his most refined works of art and it interprets the depth human mind perceives. The boy, in the story, lives with his parents and two younger sisters in a well-off family and a gorgeous house. All the three children feel the presence of an unseen whispering repeatedly, in the whole environment of the dwelling, that ââ¬Å"there should be more moneyâ⬠. ââ¬Å"The children could hear it at Christmasâ⬠, the writer states, ââ¬Å"when the expensive and splendid toys filled the nursery.à Behind the shining modern rocking-horse, behind the smart dolls-house, a voice would start whispering:à There must be more money!à à There must be more money!â⬠(Lawrence, 1926:2). Paul, being the eldest and the most sensitive, strives to acquire information from his mother regarding the problem of money shortage and its solution. On coming to know about the fact that his father is an unlucky person, and cannot earn a lot, he assures his mother that he is a lucky one. Thus, he seems determined to search for luck and fortune in life to prove himself as fortu nate. Here, Lawrence skillfully articulates the ideas floating in a childââ¬â¢s mind and his quest to make efforts for the uplift of his family within his available resources. In order to obtain luck, the small hero starts riding his tiny wooden rocking toy horse taking it the real one. Paul whips the horse and drove it in an extremely high speed to reach the place where luck dwells. As the
